IRC or Internet Relay Chat is a protocol that enables real-time text communications between people. To start, a client connects to a server (or more commonly a network of servers) where clients have either one on one conversations or group conversations in channels. An IRC client is an application you run on your computer which connects you to a remote IRC server, on which you can join real-time chat rooms on about a gazillion different topics, or create a room of your own for others to come in and chat with you.
